The Sunday Times (28 January 2007) featured two interesting stories, projecting contrasting values.
Let me start with a Malay father, supposed to be rich, bought two cars, one for her daughter, and one for her cousin. Mind you, not the China Geely, but the latest Peugeot. Both are still studying in Poly. From the experience as a car-owner, I think the two girls need to spend at least $1,200 on petrol, parking fees, insurance, etc. Where on earth can she get that amount of money? Again father lah.
A contrasting story is about an Chinese Indonesian father who sent her daughter to study in Singapore. How much did he gave her. Just $1,000 and throughout her university days she managed her money well (this include a study loan from DBS). After graduating with Honours in Engineering, she felt that her degree will not take her far in life. She took a course in Insurance for a further six months. And what is she now? She made her first million at the age of 26.
What contrasting values. One father showered her daughter and cousin unnecessarily, while the other taught her daughter to live frugally. I'm sure you have some stories to tell.//
